Bagged Mulch vs Bulk Mulch

Updated November 1, 2026

Bagged mulch and bulk mulch are the same volume sold two ways. Bags are a count of the cubic feet printed on the plastic. Bulk is cubic yards on a truck. The Mulch Calculator orders yards. This page is how to choose the purchase, using one bed so the two counts describe the same job. The yard arithmetic itself is on How Much Mulch Do I Need?.

One bed, written both ways

The shared example is one bed, 10 feet by 12 feet, 3 inches deep, with 10 percent waste.

  • Exact volume: 1.11 cubic yards. With 10 percent waste: 1.22 cubic yards.
  • Bulk order: 1.25 cubic yards, the next quarter yard.
  • A 2 cubic foot bag: 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 bags per yard. 1.25 × 13.5 = 16.875, so 17 bags.
  • A 3 cubic foot bag: 27 ÷ 3 = 9 bags per yard. 1.25 × 9 = 11.25, so 12 bags.

Use the cubic feet printed on the bag in your hand. A label that is not 2 or 3 cubic feet replaces these two counts. It does not change the 1.25 yard bulk order.

When bags fit

Bags fit when you can carry them and a truck cannot. A small bed, a side yard with no dump spot, or a color the yard does not deliver in bulk are the usual reasons. You will make more trips from the car to the bed. You also control the last bag: buy the 17 or the 12, and stop.

The bag price is yours to multiply. Seventeen bags at the price on a 2 cubic foot bag, or twelve bags at the price on a 3 cubic foot bag. The calculator will not do that multiplication.

When bulk fits

Bulk fits when the order is about a yard or more and a truck can dump where you can wheel the pile. One 1.25 yard load replaces the 17 bags. The yard may have a minimum load. Ask them. This page does not invent that minimum.

The calculator's price is dollars per cubic yard of that bulk order. Leave it blank and the tool uses an illustrative $45 per yard stored on the calculator. On this bed the range is:

  • Low: $47.81
  • Mid: $56.25
  • High: $67.50

All three are marked Illustrative. Low is 15 percent under the $45 example and high is 20 percent over it. Type your own mid price per yard and the mid line becomes your price. A bag price typed into the per-yard field prices the wrong unit.

What this choice leaves out

Delivery fees, a minimum load, tax, and the color match between dye lots are outside both counts. Fabric and edging are separate. The 1.25 yards and the 17 bags are mulch only. Pick the purchase that can actually land next to the bed, then price that purchase in its own unit.

FAQ

Is 1.25 cubic yards the same mulch as 17 bags?

The volume matches a 2 cubic foot bag. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so one yard is 13.5 of those bags. The 1.25 yard order is 16.875 bags, which you round up to 17. A 3 cubic foot bag is 9 per yard, so the same 1.25 yards is 12 bags. The yard order does not change when you switch bags.

Why does a blank mulch calculator show about $56 instead of a bag price?

The price field is dollars per cubic yard of bulk. With the price left blank, the tool uses its illustrative $45 per yard. On this bed that is a mid figure of $56.25, with a low of $47.81 and a high of $67.50, all marked Illustrative. A bag price does not belong in that field.

When should I stay with bags even if the bed is over a yard?

Stay with bags when a truck cannot dump where you can move the pile, or when you need a color the yard does not deliver in bulk. You will carry more units, and you multiply the bag price yourself. The calculator still reports the 1.25 yard bulk order.

Does a deeper bed change which purchase is cheaper?

It changes the volume, and then you price that volume both ways. This page holds the 3 inch example still so the yard count and the bag count describe one bed. A 2 inch depth on the same footprint is the 1.00 cubic yard order on the quantity guide. Price the bags from the bag in your hand either way.

Use the calculator

The Mulch Calculator turns this bed into cubic yards and rounds the bulk order up to the next 0.25 yard. Leave the price blank and the cost range is an illustrative bulk-yard example. It does not count bags or price them. The result is a planning quantity, not a contractor bid or a store quote.
